The grinding of the bone or the inflammation of the
bone makes it necessary for patients to undergo surgical
management of arthritis.
Major types of orthopedic surgery
Joint replacement
Joint replacement is a sort of surgical management of
arthritis. It has conferred a new life on thousands
of arthritis-affected patients who were turned slaves
to bedridden existence or wheelchair. In this particular
arthritis treatment knees, elbows, shoulders, or finger
joints are replaced. The success of this treatment is
certain in nine cases out of ten cases. However, the
replacement surgery is not free form complications.
Loosening of the prosthesis in the center of the thigh
and infection are two main complications. But, the occurrence
of complications is not frequent.
Synovectomy
Synovectomy is another mode of orthopedic surgery. It
is performed to remove the inflamed tissue from the
inner lining of the joint. The removal of the diseased
tissue reduces the risk of an injury to the joint. The
additional advantage of synovectomy is that it gives
patients a relief from the severe joint pain. The knee
joint is basically treated by this surgical procedure
of arthritis.
Arthrodesis or bone fusion
Arthrodesis is a kind of surgical management of arthritis.
It treats a joint by fusing or joining together two
separate bones. Sometimes, a severe blow or damage to
a joint separates the bones that form the joint. Even
if, the new fused joint is less flexible than before,
it is more steady and stable than the diseased one.
The fusion of bones also reduces the severity of pain
in the joint. A damaged neck vertebra is treated this
way to reduce the possibility of injury to the surrounding
nerves.
Arthroplasty
The reconstruction of a damaged joint is medically known
as arthroplasty. It falls into the category of orthopedic
surgery. In this surgical procedure, a severely diseased
joint is rebuilt. Sometimes, cartilage at the ends of
bones that form a joint is worn away and as a result,
the joint is destroyed. The resurfacing and relining
of the bones at the ends strengthens the formation of
the joint.
Recovery
It might take several weeks to recover after the surgery.
The patient has to undertake a planned program for exercise
to strengthen his/her muscles around the joints that
have been operated on. Those with better endurance and
strength have greater chances of quick recovery.
