Breast Reconstruction & Post Mastectomy

When a person is suffering from breast cancer, reconstructive breast surgery is done for the purpose of replacing skin and the breast tissues. In case of mastectomy, the nipple is removed and the quantity of the missing tissues varies with every mastectomy. The factors that are responsible for the removal of the tissues are the width, size and location of the original tumor as well as the measurement of the closeness towards the armpit, known as the axilla. Axilla is the removal point of the lymph glands.

Purpose of breast reconstruction

The purpose of the breast reconstruction is to maintain equilibrium between the two breasts. The effects for the absence of breasts vary from woman to woman. Some may not face many problems with the absence of the breasts while it may affect others too. When mastectomy is performed, you can also wear pads or external breast forms. The other option that remains is breast reconstruction where you can go for breast implantation.

For women who face mastectomy, breast reconstruction is the best remedy. In the recent times, plastic surgery has played a major role with their best techniques and has come out with fantastic feedbacks. Breast reconstruction not only makes the physical appearance better but also provides psychological benefits to the women as well.

Cosmetic surgery does not refer to the restoration of the breast. The operations that are conducted to maintain the symmetry between the breasts are referred to reconstructive surgery. After mastectomy, the breast reconstruction that takes place is just a part of treatment of the disease. It is not what you call cosmetic surgery.

Procedure with different techniques

The patient is given an anesthetic medication to render him or her unconscious and relieve surgical pain during the surgery. The type of anesthesia depends on certain physical conditions of the patient.

The surgeon repositions the muscle; skin and fat of the patient's breasts by using flap techniques and creates the breast mound. Sometimes a radiation therapy or mastectomy leaves inadequate tissue on the wall of the chest to support and cover a breast implant. A breast implant to reconstruct the breasts require tissue expansion or flap technique.

A flap technique uses skin, fat and muscle from the abdomen for breast reconstruction. The flap may be either attached to the blood supply or completely detached. The surgeon may alternatively choose the SGAP or DIEP flap techniques to perform the surgery. These techniques transport tissue from the buttock or abdomen to the chest but do not make use of muscle

Healthy skin around the breasts is stretched by tissue expansion to cover a breast implant. Reconstruction with flap procedures involves a slower recovery than that with tissue expansion. Besides a breast implant, silicone and saline implants are in use for breast reconstruction. Tissue expansion is must for reconstruction with a breast implant.

The surgeon performs the surgery by making incisions in the breasts or the skin around the breasts. The implant is inserted into the breasts through the incisions. After the surgery, the incisions are closed with stitches and dressed with sterile bandage.

Recovery of breast reconstruction

Mastectomy is the medical term for the removal of the breasts through surgery. The main purpose of Mastectomy is to cure breast cancer. Some fear that it is better to prevent breast cancer rather than to go for its treatment. It is rather a great medical procedure for the treatment of breast cancer in males.
