Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Nose surgery is a surgical procedure to enhance the appearance and improve the functioning of the nose. The medical term for nose surgery is Rhinoplasty. An otolaryngologist, plastic surgeon or maxillofacial surgeon performs Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty consists of two parts and these are reconstructive surgery for improving the function and cosmetic surgery for beautifying look of the nose. It is also performed to treat damage to the nose and correct nose related breathing problems or birth defects.

The Surgical Procedure

Step 1: Anesthesia

First of all, patients who are supposed to undergo a nose surgery are made unconscious. They are relieved the pain of incision during the operation under the spell of anesthesia. Anesthetic medications including sedation anesthesia or general anesthesia are given to them. What type of anesthesia should be administered to a patient depends on his or her physical conditions.

Step 2: The Incision

A nose surgery is performed either in an open procedure or a closed procedure. In the open procedure of the surgery, incisions are made inside the nose. In case of the open procedure of the surgery, the surgeon makes incision across the "columell" that is a narrow tissue strip separating the nostrils. Through incisions, the surgeon peels the soft tissues from the surface inside the nose to reconstruct the structure or correct the structural abnormalities of the nose.

Step 3: Reshaping The Structure Of The Nose

A nose surgery can augment or reduce nasal structures using cartilage from other areas of the body. Cartilage pieces are basically grafted from the septum, the ear or the rib cartilage for the purpose.

Step 4: Correcting A Damaged Septum

The septum forms partition in the mid of the nostrils. Inner projections of the nose harm the septum and distort the overall structure of the nose. It also obstructs the way of breathing. The nose surgery reduces these unwanted projections to correct the damaged septum and improve breathing.

Step 5: Closing The Incision

The surgeon closes the incisions by stitching them up after the outline of the nose is shaped; nasal tissue and skin are redraped. Internal tubes and splints support and speed up the healing of the nose within a week.

Risks And Complications

Some risks and complications are associated with the surgical procedure of Rhinoplasty.
Improper execution of a nose surgery can lead to developing the following risks and complications:

  • Nasal infection
  • Poor healing of the wound
  • Anesthesia risks
  • Nose asymmetry
  • Hematoma (bleeding)
  • Pulmonary and cardiac complications (rare)
  • Numbness, skin sensation
  • Blood clotting
  • Nasal septal hole or perforation
  • Persistent pain
  • Unfavorable pain
  • Alterations in nasal airway
  • Skin contour irregularities
  • Swelling
  • Skin discoloration

How Long Is The Recovery Period?

After the surgery, a splint or an internal tube is placed inside the nose. The outside of the nose is bandaged to protect the treated part of the nose at the initial phase of healing. In normal cases, patients recover in a few weeks after the surgery but it may take you several months to recover in cases with complications.
