Different Procedures of Nipple Reduction
The procedure of mammoplasty depends on certain conditions and factors
such as the anatomy of nipples, the amount of reduction and the desired
shape and size of nipples. Methods of nipple reduction are different.
It includes removal of the top part of the nipples, pushing the enlarged
part of the nipples into the tissue of the breasts and removal of the
skin around the tip of the nipples.
There is little discomfort during the execution of mammoplasty. Sensation
is normal after the treatment. If the doctor performs nipple reduction
through incisions, the patient is kept senseless under the spell of an
anesthesia during the treatment hours. Most patients while undergoing
the simpler process of mammoplasty need no sedative.
The doctor determines which portion of the nipples is to be reduced. Nipples
can be reduced in length or width or both depending on their shape and
size.
Length Reduction
Large nipples droop down because of their excess length. To shorten the nipples by reducing their length, the doctor cuts down the nipples at the tip through incisions. Then, the incisions are closed with sutures. The skin around the nipples is sometimes reduced. In these circumstances, the nipples are pushed at the tip to the bottom.
Width Reduction
If the nipples are large and thick in width, the doctor reduces them in
width. The doctor reduces the circumference of the nipples by removing
a pie-shaped wedge from the nipple undersurfaces. In the reduction of
nipples in width, the doctor uses dissolving sutures.
Recovery
Recovery process is much shorter and period is much faster. Most patients resume their daily activities within one or two days after the treatment. They can wash their breasts after one day of having mammoplasty. The stitches are removed in four to seven days after the treatment. Pain and swelling are minimal at the post-treatment stage. If the pain is intense, it is recommended to take some painkilling medicine.
