Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)

Neck lift is a surgery to reduce the loose sagging skin in the area around the neck. Persons with fleshy neck, neck banding or plastysma, turkey waddle or jowls can benefit undergoing the surgical procedure of neck lift. The skin of the area around the neck sometimes hangs down on the shoulders due to fat deposits. Besides, the neck area begins to age faster than the face in case of some individuals. The sagging of neck is in some cases hereditary. The surgery removes excess fat tissues from the neck area and tones up the skin and muscles of the neck. Neck lift is often performed in combination with face-lift and brow lift for facial rejuvenation and wrinkle ablation.

The Surgical Procedure

The surgical procedure of neck lift generally takes two or three hours to execute. First of all, the surgeon will attach monitoring pads to you so as to properly observe and examine some vital data before, after and during the execution of the surgery. The monitoring pads will be attached to the electrodes in the operation room. Then, an anesthesia will be administered to you to render you senseless during the operation after you lie on the operating table.

There are generally some risks from anesthesia but the application of oral sedatives like Valium entails almost no risks. You may be kept hydrated with a saline drip. The saline drip is an entryway to add anesthesia and antibiotics to you. The use of sedatives may be stressful for some patients. The surgeon inserts the saline drip in any of the hands or in the area near the elbow. The place of inserting it depends on the thickness of the veins.

In some cases, the surgeon inserts a catheter into the vein. Catheter is a plastic tube. While inserting the catheter the surgeon injects a needle into the vein and then pulls it out leaving the catheter there. The impact of anesthesia is felt right after the injection. Anesthesia may give you a hot sensation while flowing to the catheter site through the arm or hand.

The surgeon may inject a solution of saline, lidocaine and epinephrine to you right before the surgical procedure of neck lift. Lidocaine is an anesthetic agent while epinephrine is a vasocontrictor. Betadine is applied on the area around the neck.

Making incisions behind or under the ear just at the beginning of the neck performs the operation. The surgeon removes a section of the fat muscle from the neck in the platysmaplasty. The sagging skin is brought together behind or under the ear to firm up the look of the neck. Then, the place of incision is stitched up and dressed up with a sterile and antibiotic-soaked bandage.

Recovery After Surgery

Patients who are likely to develop complications after surgery recover slower than those who are not at such a risk. Some pain relievers are recommended for you to ease your discomfort due to pain at the incision point. You may feel sleepy for a few days after the surgery. The neck area will remain swollen for some days but the swelling will disappear gradually. Intake of liquid food is better for the well being of the neck as it involves the restricted movement of the place that has undergone the surgery. It takes two to three weeks for a patient to recover absolutely.

Risks And Complications

It would be wrong to assume that no surgery involves risks or complications. Similar is the case with neck lift or platysmaplasty. The basic risks and complications that patients after undergoing the surgery may experience are the following:

Risks of anesthesia
Asymmetry
Lumpiness
Seroma or hematoma
Skin mottling
Laxity relapse in the neck area
Incision scar
Numbness at the incision site
