Male Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery that males with enlarged or over developed breasts undergo is medically known as gynecomastia. The surgery is performed to reduce the enlarged breasts of males in size and shape. This surgical treatment not only tightens and strengthens but also tones and firms up the male breast muscles and tissues.

Some Facts About Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can occur in men of any age group. Possible causes of male enlarged breasts are hormonal changes, chronic disease, and long intake of certain drugs or hereditary conditions. The characteristics or symptoms of gynecomastia are as given below:

Excess development of tissue development
Excess localized fat
Combination of excess glandular tissue and fat

Two types of gynecomastia are unilateral (one enlarged breast) and bilateral (both enlarged breasts).

Procedure

Plastic surgery to reduce the size of male breasts, enhance and flatten the chest contours is medically known as reduction mammoplasty. The areola (dark skin around the nipple) is sagged and stretched being weighted down by excess tissue of the breasts. Mammoplasty improves the size and position of the areola by removing excess skin.

The surgery is performed through incisions that are made in the skin around the breasts or the nipples. The patient is kept unconscious under the impact of an anesthesia during the surgery hours. Then, the surgeon inserts surgical tools into the breasts through the incisions. The excess fat deposit and tissue are removed from the breasts. The surgeon inserts also a laparoscopic tube with a camera into the breast to view the entire process minutely from the outside.

After the surgery, the surgeon takes out the tools and closes incisions with stitches. The treated area of the breasts is applied with an antibiotic and dressed with sterile bandage.

Recovery

You will be provided with a set of specific instructions to take care of yourself at the postoperative stage regarding the following:

How to clean the place of incision
Which lotion or gel should be applied on incision and how to apply
Which medication to take for avoiding the risks of surgery and when and how to take
Which foods to eat after the surgery

Besides, it is better to stay at home all the time for a few days than going outside or taking a ride. You should restrict your movements and activities for the well being of the operated part of your body. You should lie on your back while sleeping. You should avoid wearing fitting cloths and doing physical workout until you recover completely. The recovery period will last for one to two months in case of male breast reduction.
