Hair Transplant
Hair transplantation involves the relocation of hair follicles from the sides and back of the head to the thinning or bald areas of the head. Hair follicles at the sides and back of the head are genetically resistant to baldness. So, the relocated hair follicles grow hair on the bald areas of the head for lifetime. In recent few years, the technique of hair transplantation has evolved from the use of mini grafts and large plugs to the use of small grafts containing one to four hairs.
Different Types Of Hair Transplantation Procedures
Micrografts
Micrografts is one of the effective treatments for hair loss. It commonly treats male baldness. It is also recommended for the treatment of female pattern baldness. Women suffer from thinning of hair in the anterior scalp of their heads for various kinds of alopecia. In case of male-pattern baldness, men transform the posterior scalp area of their heads, which are prone to lose hair untimely by transplanting hair from the anterior scalp area to there. This is done in the process of micrografts.
Minigraft
Minigraft technique is a successful treatment for male pattern baldness. The procedure reduces scarring and turns up with long-term effects. It is in fact, a microsurgical process of grafting hairs. It consists of taking out hairs from the scalp area that is thick with hair and placing them into the area of baldness through a delicate incision.
Scalp Reduction
Scalp reduction is another technique in the treatment of hair loss. It is a sort of hair replacement surgery. It reduces the bald portion of the head by excising and removing scalp skin of the head. Scalp reduction is usually executed in the process of minigrafts.
Scalp Extension
Scalp extension is a hair loss preventing treatment. In this mode of hair loss treatment, the hair-bearing area of the head is stretched placing a rubberband like flat device below the scalp. This technique is basically performed in combination with scalp reduction to reduce the bald scalp area on the one hand and extend the hair-bearing area of the head on the other at the same time.
Tissue Expansion
Tissue expansion too, is an effective mode of hair transplantation. A balloon like device is surgically placed below the hair-containing scalp of the head in this procedure. The expansion of the balloon occurs weekly and extends the hair-containing scalp area of the head 2 to 3 times in width and length. Then, excision of the bald scalp is done in the method of scalp reduction and the expanded scalp is relocated into the hairless area.
Scalp Rotation
Scalp rotation, a technique of hair replacement involves the rotation of the hair-containing skin from the sides and back of the head to the anterior or front segment of the head.
About The Recovery
Recovery period depends on the way the hair transplantation is done. Patients are required to wear a head turban for twenty-four hours right after the surgery in case of mini and micro graft procedures. The combing is done after the removal of the turban and Neosporin is applied on the graft spot of the head. The small scabs in the area surrounding the micrograft site fall off in the course of a week. Applying vitamin E heals the wound on the graft site.
