Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)

Facelift is a surgical sort of cosmetic procedure. It is medically known as Rhytidectomy. Face lift surgery is basically done to improve the look of the face and neck by removing visible marks of aging. Rhytidectomy literally means surgical removal of lines and wrinkles. Undergoing this surgery gives a youthful appearance to an aging person. It tones the facial skin by removing or tightening excess underlying tissues.

Physical Conditions To Determine The Occurrence Of The Surgery

The circumstances or the effects of aging that require you to undergo a face lift are as follows:

  • Drooping in the mid of the face
  • Deep creases underneath the lower eyelids
  • Loose or wrinkled skin of the forehead or the cheeks
  • Deposit of excess fat below the jaw and chin
  • Deep creases around the nose and the mouth
  • Decay of muscle in the lower portion of the face
  • Ill distribution of fat throughout the face

Procedure

The first step in the procedure of the facelift is anesthesia. Anesthetic medications are given to you not to make you feel the pain of incision during the surgery. Incision is the next step of the surgical procedure. The place of incision is decided on the basis of examining the structure and pattern of the face. Whether you have any complications is also a factor to take into account before making incisions. In case of a normal facelift surgery, incisions are made in the hairline. Underlying tissue from the deep facial layers are either lifted or repositioned. Fat may be redistributed or sculpted from the face, neck and jowls.

The surgeon trims away excess skin making incisions. Incision is also made under the chin to improve the texture of the face further. Sagging neck skin, sagging jowls and accumulated fat under the chin are corrected by removing excess skin in a facelift. After replacement or removal of excess fat or skin, the incisions are closed with skin adhesives or sutures. The place of incisions is dressed with a sterile bandage after applying some antibacterial ointment on it.

Risks And Complications

Unfavorable scarring

Recovery

Some medications will be prescribed to lessen the comfort that you may experience due to pain after the surgery. Swelling may take several weeks to dissipate fully and incision lines will take almost six months to mature. You need sun protection to ensure absolute recovery after the surgery.
