Ptosis occurs due to the weakening of the eye muscles such as Muller's and Levator's muscles. These muscles are sometimes not strong enough to lift the eyelids properly. It is common to occur among elderly people as eyelid muscles begin to weaken with the growing age. Damage to the muscles or the third cranial nerve that is oculomotor nerve may cause this problem. Ptosis may be a symptom of some underlying diseases like brain tumor, diabetes mellitus and myasthenia gravis. Ptosis also results from fat deposits in the eye. If puffy or droopy eyelids are left untreated, it may develop into a medical problem.
Types Of Eyelid Ptosis
Eyelid surgery is of different types. Some of them that are very common are as follows:
Canthoplasty - Canthoplasty is a sort of eyelid ptosis
that is performed to tighten and strengthen the lower eyelid.
Resurfacing Eyelid Surgery - In this surgery, wrinkles in the area around the eyes are removed with Botox.
Laser Eyelid Surgery - This mode of eyelid surgery makes certain changes to both upper and lower eyelids. In this surgery, incisions are made using laser.
Procedure
The surgeon makes incisions along creases around the upper eyelid and removes excess fat, loose skin and muscles in the cases of upper eyelid surgery. To perform a lower eyelid surgery the surgeon makes incisions underneath the eyelid. When excess fat is the sole cause of eyelid bags, the surgery is performed by making incision inside the eyelids. In this case, excess fat deposit is either repositioned or removed. The surgeon closes up the incisions with sutures after the surgery. The patient is administered a local anesthesia just before the surgical procedure begins. The eyes are lubricated with an ointment and then, bandaged. The surgeon removes the stitches in a week. The entire process of the surgery takes one to three hours to complete.
Recovery
It will certainly take you some time to resume normal activities of your eyes after the surgery. You should take some safety measures at the postoperative stage to reap the benefits of the surgery. Watching television right after the surgery proves fatal to your eyes. You are required to put on contact lenses all the time for at least two weeks and not to watch television for four to five days. It will take you seven to ten days to return to normal life and activities. For absolute recovery, you should avoid strenuous activities such as drinking alcohol.
