Endoscopic Brain Surgery
Endoscopic brain surgery is performed to treat wound
of the brain and damage to its surrounding structures.
It is executed by making an incision in the skull. Persons
go through this vital surgery under severe physical
circumstances. These include brain hemorrhage, blood
clotting, brain tumor, abnormality and weakness of the
blood vessels. Skull fractures, chronic facial pain,
severe nerve infection, damaged brain tissues are the
unavoidable factors that make it necessary for patients
to go for endoscopic brain surgery. This mode of brain
surgery is also known as minimally invasive neurosurgery.
Advantages of the endoscopic brain
surgery
Shortened period of the surgery is an advantage of the
endoscopic brain surgery. The time it takes is less
than the time required by a traditional brain surgery.
It takes one and a half hour to two hours to execute
the surgery meticulously.
The larger the incision, the more is the pain due to
discomfort. A delicate incision is made to perform the
endoscopic surgery of the brain. It causes the patients
less discomfort and thereby, less pain.
All surgeries leave the patients with incision scars.
In the procedure of an endoscopic brain surgery, the
incision mark disappears after a few months of the surgery.
This mode of brain surgery requires the patients to
stay in hospital for maximum four to five days. After
that they are discharged with a prescription of antibiotics
and a set of instructions to be followed at the postoperative
stage.
Procedure
The hair is shaved from the area of the scalp to make
an incision there. After cleansing the scalp an incision
is made through the skull. Then, the endoscopic tube
is inserted into the skull through the incision to perform
the surgery.
Endoscope that is a thin tube is the key tool in the
execution of the endoscopic brain surgery. This surgical
tool is attached to a video to provide a vivid and accurate
image of the brain and its structure through an incision
in the skull. Small tools for cutting or destroying
abnormal tumors and tissues are passed through the endoscopic
tube. It allows the surgery to be executed with little
difficulty. Persons of all age groups from children,
adults to the old benefit from the endoscopic surgery
of the brain.
Endoscopic brain surgery for hydrocephalus
Endoscopic brain surgery is a recommended treatment
for hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus occurs when spinal
fluid gets accumulated in the ventricles (fluid spaces)
of the brain. The endoscopic approach of the brain surgery
is also made to treating brain tumors. The procedure
of treatment varies with the problems of the brain.
For example, if the hydrocephalus is caused by a blockage,
the surgeon creates a tiny hole to drain the spinal
fluid from around the area of the blockage.
Recovery
It takes patients a few weeks to recover after the surgery.
Though, the recovery period is a bit lengthy, it is
faster in comparison to that in case of a traditional
brain surgery. The patients are instructed to restrict
their movements and activities that may put their brains
under stress. Less indulgence in stressful activities
and timely intake of medicines will speed up the process
of recovery.
