Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery

The surgical treatment of ear, nose and throat is the treatment of deformations, diseases or injuries of the ears, nose, throat, neck and the head.

The ENT surgery is performed to treat a disease or defect in the anatomical areas of the ears, nose, throat, neck and head. An anatomical defect or deformity is a disease that generally occurs during the embryological development. An anatomical disease may develop into a severe medical condition such as neck cancer or head cancer in later life. The ENT surgery is medically known as otorhinolaryngology. It also includes surgical treatment of diseases in the neck and head regions.

An ear surgery is performed to remove the factors that are directly or indirectly responsible for hearing loss. Nose surgery includes several types of surgical procedures to correct sinus problems. Sinus surgery is a special sinus-treating surgical procedure. Throat surgery includes some complicated procedures like laryngectomy and some simple procedures like tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Removal of tumor and reconstruction of a disfigured area make it necessary to go for a neck or head surgery.

Different types of ENT surgeries

Major cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries fall into the category of ENT surgery. Cosmetic surgery includes surgical procedures as hair transplantation, chin augmentation, and face lift to remove wrinkles of the face and contours of the ears and nose. A reconstructive ENT surgery is executed to correct an injury or deformity. Pediatric otolaryngology is a sort of ENT surgery that treats ENT related diseases in infants and children.

Ear surgery

Correction of hearing impairment or loss causing defects is the utility of ear surgery. It includes several surgeries such as stapedectomy, myringotomy and tympanoplasty.
Stapedectomy is the surgical removal of the stapes that is the middle ear bone.
Myringotomy is the treatment for an ear infection. It is accomplished by inserting an ear tube to drain the fluid accumulated in the ears of persons suffering from ear infection.
Tympanoplasty is performed to reconstruct the damaged or disfigured eardrum.

Nose surgery

Congestion and septoplasty are two common procedures of nose surgery. Persons affected with nasal disorders and sinus problems undergo these surgeries.
Congestion - It removes the cause of chronic nasal obstruction
Septoplasty - It corrects a disfigured nasal septum.

Throat surgery

Adenoid and tonsils are lymph tissues that help the body fight infection. Chronic inflammation or infection of the adenoids and tonsils causes infections of the middle ear that in turn, leads to hearing loss.
Laryngectomy - It is a surgical treatment for larynx cancer.
Tonsillectomy - It is a surgical procedure to remove tonsils.
Adenoidectomy - It is a surgical procedure to remove adenoids.

Neck surgery

Tracheotomy - It is recommended for those persons whose lungs are supplied with insufficient oxygen. It is accomplished by making an opening in the window or trachea.

Radical neck dissection - It removes cancer cells that spread to the lymph nodes of the neck region through lymphatic vessels.

ENT surgeons perform some special surgeries such as neuro-otology (skull-based surgeries) and sleep disorder-treating surgeries.

Recovery

The period and process of recovery are not the same in all surgical treatments for ear, nose, throat and neck. It takes time to recover from an ENT surgery. Recovery period is longer for patients with complications. Following a set of instructions and a prescription of medicines at the post-operative stage will speed up the process of recovery.
