Chin Surgery

Chin surgery is a surgical procedure to reshape the damaged chin. Mentoplasty is a medical term for chin surgery. When an injury causes damage to the chin and distorts its frame, chin surgery is performed. Even if, it is done to treat a damaged skin, it changes the look of the entire face affecting the shape of cheek and nose to some extent.

The cosmetic mode of chin surgery not only reshapes the chin but also removes flaws or blemishes from the skin around it.

Different types of chin surgery

Genioplasty - Genioplasty is a kind of chin surgery that is executed to improve a feeble chin by strengthening the bone of chin. The surgeon removes a part of the jaw with a bone saw under this chin surgery procedure. Then, the bone is moved forward. The surgeon keeps it in a right place with metal plates and screws.

Chin Reduction Surgery - The chin of some people is lengthy downwards. The excess length of their chins is reduced by chin reduction surgery. Chin reduction surgery is a kind of cosmetic surgery. The surgeon performs the surgery making an incision in the chin to sculpt the bone. The surgeon stitches up the incision after removing the excess of the chin bone.

Double Chin Plastic Surgery - Double chin plastic surgery is a sort of cosmetic chin surgery with a difference. It helps people get rid of double chin by removing excess fatty tissues and skin. Tumescent Liposuction is a double chin plastic surgery in which the excess fat of the chin is removed through a small incision in the chin.

Procedure

First of all, the surgeon discusses with the patient regarding the changed look of the face after the procedure. Some surgeons sometimes, follow computer-imaging process to show the patient how his or her face will appear after the surgery. All types of chin surgery including plastic and cosmetic surgeries are generally performed keeping the patients under an impact of intravenous anesthesia.

The surgeon begins the procedure of the surgery by making an incision either underneath the chin or inside the mouth. The advantage of making an inside mouth incision is to avoid having an external wound. A chin surgery takes nearly thirty minutes.

There are different chin implants that are effective in efficacy. Silicone and Gortex are two common chin implants that are done to reconstruct the damaged chin with optimum result.

The type of chin implant depends on the anatomy of an individual’s chin. The surgeon places an implant just in front of the mandible and deep into the soft tissue of the chin to increase the projection and alter the contour of the chin under treatment.

The place of incision is stitched up and the chin is covered with a sterile bandage for three to four days after the surgery. Overall improvement is visible six to seven weeks after the surgery.

Recovery

You will initially find it difficult to talk, smile and chew right after the surgery. You will feel discomfort due to pain and swelling in the incision area of the treated chin for a few days. Absolute recovery after the surgery depends on some factors like dental hygiene, intake of liquid food and restrained movement of the jaws and teeth. It will take you two or three weeks to recover.
