Arm Lift

Arm lift is applicable in patients who suddenly witness a natural or induced weight loss. This sudden change in weight often leaves excess skin that requires reshaping. Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, breast reduction, arm lift, thigh lift and buttock lifts are similar such cosmetic procedures, all aimed at removing the extra flesh and restoring a youthful look. Arm lift is also known as brachioplasty and removes the unwanted skin, called bat wings, in the underside of the upper arm. Bat wings are common among women in their late thirties or early forties.

The Procedures

There are three types of arm lift procedures according to the condition:

  • Liposuction for fat and sagging arms
  • Excision for excess skin
  • Combination of excision and liposuction to treat the simultaneous occurrence of both conditions

Excision Is A More Complicated Process Than Liposuction

Broadly, arm lift is a 2 to 4 hour procedure that requires an under IV sedation or general anesthesia. These incisions are done under the less visible areas underneath the inner arm area, running from the armpit to the elbow. The areas beyond the elbow are avoided due to the presence of various sensitive nerves, arteries and tendons. The incision is generally a curved Z-shaped one since it heals faster than a linear incision. The combination of an arm lift and liposuction achieves total cosmetic contouring of the area and is hence preferred by many.

Post Operative care and Recovery

After surgery, supportive ace wraps are required for about four weeks. The arms are substantially swollen for the first ten days. Short-sleeved clothes are more comfortable after surgery.

Effectiveness

The final outcome becomes visible six to eight months after surgery. In most cases patients are satisfied, as the overall appearance of the arms witness a marked change and allows them to fit into their desired clothes.
