Appendix Surgery

Appendix surgery is a surgical treatment of appendicitis. The appendix is removed out of the body in this medical procedure. The operation is performed by making three small incisions or through a laparoscopic approach. If the appendicitis is revealed to be associated with complications like abscess, rupture or adhesions, open laparotomy becomes necessary. The treatment of appendicitis is medically known as appendectomy.

What Is Appendicitis

There are several factors, which cause acute belly pain. Appendicitis is one of them. It occurs when the appendix that is a part of the large intestine becomes swollen and infected. As far as it is known that the appendix has no function in the body. It does neither good nor harm to the body. But, it sometimes causes problems such as bellyache. Appendicitis is common among 8% of the population. Persons aging from ten to thirty years tend to suffer from it. However, it can occur at any age.

What Causes Appendicitis

Several medical studies have been made regarding for identifying the causes of appendicitis. Generally, when the appendix is infected appendicitis occurs. In some cases, even a delicate object like stool blocks the cavity of the appendix. It leads to the growth and development of bacteria in the appendix. Thus, the appendix gets infected.

Treatment

The first stage of the appendicitis treatment is to keep the patient from drinking or eating anything a few hours before the execution of surgery. Using an intravenous drip hydrates the patient. Antibiotics such as metronidazole and cefuroxime are given to the patient in order to prevent the bacteria from spreading and infecting the abdomen with postoperative complications. In case the stomach is absolutely empty, the patient is rendered unconscious with general anesthesia.

Laparoscopic appendectomy is preferred to open laparotomy. Wound infections are less likely to occur after laparoscopic appendectomy than open laparotomy. Recovery after laparoscopic appendectomy is faster than open laparotomy. So, employed patients benefit much from the laparoscopic appendectomy.

Some Facts About Appendectomy

Most appendicitis patients get rid of appendicitis through appendectomy. But complications may come to the surface if the treatment procedure is delayed or peritonitis occurs. It is difficult to diagnose appendicitis especially in children, older people and pregnant women.

The period and process of recovery depends on condition, complications, age and many other circumstances. Life style, eating habit and activities are the other factors that have an influence on recovery. In case of young children, recovery takes almost three weeks.

Stump appendicitis is another severe complication that develops from incomplete appendectomy. It is in fact, an inflammation of the appendicle stump that remains as leftover in the body due to incomplete appendectomy.
